THOUSANDS of people are expected to be out and about on Saturday night for firework displays in the district.

The largest will be the St Albans Cathedral Charity Fireworks Spectacular at Verulamium Park at 7.30pm.

It generally attracts around 18,000 people into the park to watch a display which has been organised by the cathedral through a team of volunteers for more than 25 years.

The main event is a 30-minute firework display, provided and operated by leading UK firework provider Fantastic Fireworks, which is one of the largest in South East England.

An entrance fee is charged of £5 per adult, £2 per child and a family ticket for £10.

Limited parking is available at the park and spectators are encouraged to park elsewhere and walk. Sparklers are no longer sold at the display following feedback from local residents and dog walkers.

All profits are devoted to charity and this year they will go to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the Hospice of St Francis as well as local charities.

At Woollams in Harpenden Road, St Albans, the OAs are holding a firework party with a 7.45pm start - gates close at 7.30pm.

Discounted family tickets are available from the clubhouse bar at Woollams and further information can be obtained by emailing ben.farrar@oarugby.com

However in Redbourn and Harpenden there are firework displays on the following Saturday, November 8.

Redbourn will hold its annual firework display on the common from 7pm on that day. The event includes a funfair, stalls, hot food and the sale of neon necklaces and wands from 6.30pm. Tickets are £2 available from the hardware store and the post office in the village.

And in Harpenden Crabtree Schools in Crabtree Lane are holding their annual display on the playing fields from 6.30pm.

Tickets are £4 in advance, £5 on the gate and a family ticket for up to four people is £15 in advance, available from Balfour Newsagent in Southdown, Happy Shopper, Savills Estate Agency and News ForYou in Station Road and Thorns in the High Street.

Last but not least, next Sunday, November 9, Harpenden Rugby Club is holding its firework extravaganza and bonfire in Redbourn Lane.

Gates open at 3.30pm for a 6pm display and there will also be bars, fairground rides and a food village including a barbecue.

Admission is £8 for adults, £5 for children and £20 for a family ticket available from The Daisy Chain Store in High Street, Crav'in on Platform One at Harpenden Thameslink Station and from the club itself.
