Thought October weather was unexpectedly pleasant? Rothampstead Research has reported its findings for last month.

It found the spooky month was relatively warm and dry, if cloudy, for this time of year.

Compared with weather readings from 1981 to 2010 there was 50.51mm less rainfall, with only 31.2mm of drizzle and only five days of over 5mm of rainfall.

In the wake of Storm Ophelia on October 18 there was the greatest downpour, with 8.6mm of water falling.

For 19 days in the month there was 0.2mm or more of rain.

However, sunshine was down with only 87.4 hours worth, more than 20 hours below average, and there were three days without any sun at all. Additionally, there were three days of ground frost.

Despite this, temperatures were above average - between 15.4ºC and 9.1ºC.
