ST ALBANS motorists will be pleased to know that after more than 24 hours of road closures, because of smoke drifting from a fire at a local wood recycling centre, the routes have now been reopened.
The Highways Agency has announced that the A414 has reopened between its junctions with the M1 (junction 7) and the A405, following advice from Herts fire and rescue service.
The roads were closed from early yesterday (Monday) after a blaze broke out at Wood Recycling Services on Appspond Lane, Potters Crouch, St Albans, on Saturday night.
However, a spokesman for Herts county council has warned that highways crews remain on standby and will close the roads again if smoke poses a safety issue overnight.
Herts fire chief Roy Wilsher said that while the A414 and A417 have now reopened, fire crews are still dealing with the fire, “so flames and smoke are visible”.
He added: “Please pay attention to the road.”
The Highways Agency has thanked motorists for their patience during the extended road closure.
