POLICE have reopened the High Street in Wheathampstead following a major fire at a listed pub this morning.

Firefighters were called to the blaze just before 6am after it broke out in a first floor bedroom.

The B651 leading into the village from St Albans remained closed for most of the afternoon between the Butterfield Road and East Lane junctions.

Four people were rescued from the 15th century building which is now severely damaged. The cause of the blaze is currently under investigation.
