CONSULTATION on a number of proposed road schemes, including the closure of the St Albans city centre's busiest road to cars, has been put back until the end of this month.

Herts County Council had originally intended to consult on a package of schemes including the closure of St Peter's Street to all vehicles except taxis and buses in December.

But a spokesperson said that there were still a few formal steps which had to be completed before consultation began and the proposals were currently in draft form. The aim was for consultation to start at the end of February, she added.

Any proposal to pedestrianise St Peter's Street is bound to be controversial - it was closed while work went ahead on the multi-million conservation scheme and traders in particular claimed to have been very badly hit.
