Renovation work on a St Albans tennis club building costing about £100,000 is full steam ahead and the new area will be available in the summer.

Greenwood Park Lawn Tennis Club in Chiswell Green along with St Stephens Parish council together secured both a grant for £74,000 from Sport England and a grant for £30,000 from the Lawn Tennis Association to revamp the old building.

The patio will be taken away, there will be new changing rooms, a new sitting area, and the door has been knocked through to lead into toilets.

Greenwood Park and the council, who own the building, worked together to find a suitable contractor and the building should be ready and open from May this year.

A member of the club, Claire Harris, described the former building as “old and tired” and added: “We seem to be making quite a lot of progress, there should be a lot more space once it’s done.

“We are excited [for it to be finished].”

She said the club caters for a wide community of about 300 people, from children who are four to 80 year olds.
