Bells will chime 50 times every day in the lead up to Remembrance Sunday to pray for Christians in dangerous places around the world.

There are 50 countries on the Open Doors World Watch List which experience the highest levels of Christian persecution - St Mary’s Church in Redbourn is praying for them with every bell toll.

Countries on the list include Libya, Kazakhstan, and Afghanistan. The first bells rang on November 2, and continue each day through to November 11.

Assistant Curate, Revd Tim Vickers, said: “In this season of remembrance where we remember those who have died and those fallen in past conflicts, it is important to also remember those parts of the world today where peace is a long way off. As a church we felt that it is important to raise awareness of the plight of Christians around the world persecuted for following Jesus Christ.”

Open Doors, a mission organisation which supports persecuted Christians, are St Mary’s Church charity of the Year 2017 - it hopes to raise £10,000 for the cause.
