TORRENTIAL rain yesterday delayed rail commuters travelling back to the district from London.

The situation was further complicated by a signal failure at West Hampstead during the rush hour, causing one train to be stuck north of Borehamwood.

District councillor Anthony Rowlands, who had caught an earlier train than usual from Blackfriars, found himself marooned there.

He said: "I was trying to get back for a Cabinet meeting at 7pm but was held up for more than 40 minutes which made me late."

A spokesman for First Capital Connect (FCC), which operates the Thameslink route, said flooding at stations had also caused speed restrictions to be applied.
