A nine-year-old railway fan became the 20,000th recorded visitor to the St Albans Signal Box.
Ryan Frake was travelling home from Margate to Nottingham with his family when they stopped to visit St Albans South Signal Box on one of its open days.
The Signal Box has opened regularly to the public since 2008, and Ryan was the 20,000th visitor. He was presented with a souvenir entry ticket and further mementoes from his visit were sent to him afterwards.
Ryan’s dad, Bob, said: “Our son Ryan was fascinated not only by the signal box, but by passing trains too.”
Signal Box trust chairman Tony Furse said: “It is a huge achievement on the part of the trust and its members to have reached this milestone in the story of the St Albans South box and its restoration. It was a delight to welcome Ryan and his family along with all the other visitors who ventured out on what was a miserably wet afternoon.”
The Signal Box is next open to the public on Sunday, April 22 from 3pm to 5pm.
