A Radlett garden designer is set to make her mark at arguably the world's most impressive horticultural event.
Kate Gould, who runs her own award-winning garden design company, will feature at Chelsea Flower Show next month.
Her exhibition entry is entitled City Living and is based on the theme of making grey Britain more green.
She said: “The inspiration was to create usable attractive urban gardens for year round use regardless of how small, difficult, or constrained the space. It is a contemporary garden on several levels, imagined in a typical urban apartment block.
“While these dwellings are often cold and slightly forbidding in appearance, they could easily be transformed with the addition of attractive green outdoor spaces for residents’ use – with comfortable and sheltered seating areas surrounded by appealing planting and tranquil water features.
“This garden could be added to existing buildings or easily inserted into new builds to effectively ‘green up’ city spaces and provide valuable habitat for wildlife and birds.”
Set on three levels, it has a mezzanine floor, a stairwell with back-lit concrete, cantilevered steps and a perforated metal screen allowing for light to filter on all levels, making them suitable for gardening and recreational use.
Green walls and a water feature add a sense of tranquility and movement, and the hard landscaping uses sustainable bamboo, luxury decorative tiles, two giant outdoor lamps and solid teak stools.
It is not the first time Kate has taken her work to the prominent Royal Horticultural Society event, which runs from May 23-27. She has won several awards for her entries in previous years, including multiple gold medals.
This year’s contribution is in the ‘fresh garden’ category and 10 metres by six metres, situated on plot 72.
