SPORTS supremo John Cushing has won promotion at his radio station LBC.

John, who lives in Harpenden with his wife, has moved from sports editor at LBC to deputy programme director which takes in all aspects of programming.

His career began at BBC Radio Norfolk in 1994 which he joined as a presenter and producer and he also worked at the Essex Radio Group before moving to Heart in London, where he was a news presenter on the drivetime show.

There he covered a number of stories, including the Potters Bar train crash before becoming sports editor of London's talk radio station LBC 97.3 and its dedicated news station LBC News 1152 in 2003, where he presents Scores, the Saturday afternoon sports programme. This keeps Londoners up to date with sports as diverse as the Premier League through to rugby and racing.

Highlights of his career to date include winning the 2006 Sony Radio Award for the Best Live Event Coverage for the 2005 boat race and presenting LBC Soccer Saturday with former England and Arsenal defender Kenny Samson.

He said: "I'm absolutely delighted to be given such a brilliant opportunity. LBC is such an important part of Londoners' lives and now I can help give them what they want from London's biggest conversation!

"Since the age of 12 - and some say I still look that young - I knew I wanted to work in radio for the rest of my life. This is a real honour and I can't wait to get stuck in."

Unsurprisingly, in his spare time John is a keen football fan who supports Norwich City and loves music.
