Five thousand purple flowers planted in St Albans for charity have started to blossom now spring has arrived.
The Rotary Club of St Albans Verulamium and local gardening Earthworks planted the crocuses outside Westminster Lodge as part of Sustainable St Albans Week last November.
It was to raise awareness of Purple for Polio, a campaign which aims to eradicate polio around the world - purple flowers were chosen because people who receive the vaccination have their fingers dipped in purple dye to stop double doses.
Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria are now the only three countries in the world where the disease is still prevalent since the campaign started more than 30 years ago.
Rotary Club member Neil Harris said it was a very worthy cause: “They are all in full bloom now, in clusters outside Westminster Lodge.”
