PATIENTS at Iain Rennie Grove House Hospice (IRGH) in St Albans enjoyed an afternoon of musical entertainment last week when students from the Purcell School performed a short concert at the hospice.

Juliana Myslov played the harp with Laura Davies on the flute, performing gentle uplifting pieces including Tadeschi Elegia, Faure Berceuse (from the Dolly Suite) and the Damase Sonata for flute and harp.

The afternoon was a great success and one patient commented: “It was like a burst of joy hearing the girls play here at Grove House.”

The Purcell School, based in Bushey, is a boarding and day school for young musicians and Britain’s oldest specialist music school. The students will be performing a 50th Anniversary Concert at St Albans Cathedral at 7.30pm next Wednesday, May 2, featuring Haydn’s Creation and Rutter’s Magnificat.

The conductor for the evening will be the world-renowned John Rutter and the concert will bring together the entire school of 180 talented musicians, either playing in the Symphony Orchestra or singing in the choir.

The concert promises to be a memorable musical experience with a donation from the evening being made to IRGH.

Tickets are still available at 12 and 15 for reserved seats, 10 for students and concessions and 5 for children and unreserved seats. To purchase tickets contact the Cathedral Information Desk 01727 890256.

Community fundraiser, Joanne Hunt said: “We are very grateful to the Purcell School for their continued support, I am sure the concert will be a sell-out success and we look forward to receiving their donation after the event to help us with our work.”
