Proposed St Albans convenience store will not be a Tesco

TESCO has no involvement with plans to demolish a building to make way for a convenience store and flats, the supermarket chain has now confirmed.
Last week the Herts Advertiser reported that proposals to demolish the former tile shop in Hatfield Road and create a new store with eight two-bedroom flats above had gone before council planners, with ‘Tesco Stores’ marked under the project title on the plans.
Tesco were unavailable for comment last week but a spokesperson for the company has since confirmed that the chain is not involved with the planning application and do not know how their name came to be associated with the scheme.
The spokesperson did however say that Tesco looked at the site a year ago but that it had not been pursued as a potential location.
The current building, which is located opposite the Rats Castle pub, houses an antiques emporium and a hairdressing salon.
The owner of the salon, Kate’s Hairdesign, has been told that her business will be retained if the project gets the thumbs-up from the district council.
