IMPROVEMENTS to disability access at St Albans Abbey have been highlighted in a major report into the state of the nation's great cathedrals.

The Abbey is singled out in the English Heritage Creative and Care Study of New Works in English Cathedrals for the design of the wheelchair lift which has created disabled access to the Shrine of St Alban. Previously it could only be reached by a flight of steps.

The design of the lift is praised in the report for its elegance and dignity in providing both spiritual and physical access.

Greg Luton, English Heritage regional director in the East of England, said it had helped to open up the Abbey to a wider public.
