Police release CCTV image of man in Radlett following phone scam

Pc Carlie Thomas, investigating for Herts Police, has appealed for help in tracing the man.

She said that a woman, from Watford, was recently the victim of an elaborate con which began with a call to her home phone, from someone pretending to be a police officer.

The woman was told that some people had been arrested after trying to use her cards to buy expensive items.

And the caller went on to ask the 58 year old to provide details of all the cards she had in the house, and key in their PIN numbers using the telephone keypad.

The caller then pretended to be someone from her bank, who had arranged for a courier to visit her home in order to collect her cards as part of the investigation.

A password was agreed so the victim would know to trust the person calling at her address.

She handed over her credit and bank cards when a man arrived at her home and gave her the password – money was later taken from her accounts.

The incident occurred between 4-7pm on July 16.

The CCTV image of the man police want to talk to in connection with the alleged scam was taken shortly after the offence, at the Esso petrol station, Watling Street, Radlett.

Pc Thomas said: “Although the victim was not physically harmed by the offender, the caller was extremely persistent and persuasive.

“He kept her on the phone for several hours throughout the scam and applied an enormous amount of pressure on her, making her feel flustered and distressed.

She was left feeling extremely upset.”
