POLICE have today (Monday) launched their Christmas and New Year anti-drink drive campaign in Herts.

They are urging revellers to limit their alcohol consumption as part of a county-wide campaign to combat drink driving.

The programme aims to inform motorists of the consequences of drinking and taking drugs before driving and so hopes to prevent drink-related road accidents.

Police officers will carry out breath tests on all drivers involved in accidents this month and they will also pay extra attention to suspicious driving. Information on drink-driving punishments and how best to avoid such accidents will also be available from officers.

Donna Pierce, strategic roads policing chief inspector, said that she was concerned for Christmas drinkers: "It's impossible to calculate your limit - you may feel OK to drive but when stopped by a police officer and breathalysed, you could be facing criminal proceedings for being over the limit. Is it really worth the risk?"

She added: "Remember, you may still be over the limit the morning after your night out so please use public transport, take a taxi or get a lift with a friend who wasn't drinking.
