A PRISONER escaped from police custody after the van transporting him to court was ambushed by armed gunmen on Monday morning.

Wayne Joseph Connor, aged 20, who lived in London Colney until 2005, was travelling from Feltham Young Offenders Institute in London to Woolwich Crown Court to stand trial for offences including racially aggravated assault and aggravated burglary.

Two suspects wearing balaclavas forced the prison van to pull over at around 7.30am and smashed the driver's side window before demanding Wayne Connor's release while threatening the driver with a shotgun. Connor then made off with the suspects in a dark blue car.

The van driver was taken to hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

A Herts Police spokesperson said that Wayne Connor was known to them as Wayne O'Connor but that he had various aliases and ages ranging between 19 and 25.

She said that he lived in London Colney until three-years-ago but that his whereabouts has been unknown to them since then.

The public have been warned not to approach Connor but to contact the Metropolitan Police immediately on 0208 247 6060 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
