ARSONISTS destroyed children's play equipment when they targeted a park.

Village firefighters were called to the play area in Flamsteadbury Lane, Redbourn, at around 9.30pm last Tuesday after members of the local Neighbourhood Watch scheme raised the alarm.

A slide combined with a playhouse, which was provided by the local residents association and installed by Redbourn Parish Council, was set on fire.

Local mother Mrs Mandie Smith, of nearby Stephens Way, said: "It's not fair on the younger children that some teenagers cause all this damage and vandalism."

If anyone has any information about the incident they are asked to contact Redbourn's local police officer, PC Christine Clayton, on 01727 796143.

A meeting will be held on Thursday to discuss whether or not Redbourn Parish Council should part fund a PCSO (Police Community Support Officer) for the village to help deter such crimes.

Since 2003, Redbourn and Wheathampstead have had a full time PCSO each but, following funding cuts, both villages have been told they have to share one PCSO unless they come up with match funding.

The cost for Redbourn would be £7,500 per year, which would increase each household's council tax bill by £3 to £5 a year, depending on the band.

People can discuss their views on the matter at the consultation meeting at the Youth Club, South Common (on the corner of Hemel Hempstead Road and The Park), which starts at 7.30pm.
