A PEDESTRIAN has been left with life threatening injuries after being struck by a car in the early hours of this morning (Friday).

The accident happened just before 1am outside the Speckled Hen pub in Hatfield Road.

A people carrier is believed to have collided with a wall and street furniture before rolling over and landing on its side.

The vehicle is also thought to have struck two pedestrians aged 17 and 18 andfrom St Albans. The 18-year-old sustained serious injuries and remains in hospital in a stable condition, but the 17-year-old was discharged this morning.

The 17-year-old from St Albans driving the green Toyota Picnic was uninjured in the accident, as were his two passengers. He was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without insurance and a full licence, and taking a vehicle without consent. He remains in police custody.

Ambulance service spokesperson Gary Sanderson said: "A man sustained life-threatening injuries and following rapid treatment and stabilisation at the roadside by paramedics and emergency medical technicians, he was taken to the QE11 hospital in Welwyn Garden City to an awaiting trauma team."

Firefighters from St Albans also attended the scene.

Watch Commander Trevor Ray said the car was extremely badly damaged and was on its side when they arrived, but nobody was trapped. He said one of the injured pedestrians was lying in the road receiving treatment from paramedics.

The road was closed until 5.30am this morning while police carried out investigations.
