AFTER years of debate, Verulamium Park in St Albans is to have cycle routes opened across it.
The decision on the contentious issue, which has been dogged by the cyclist vs pedestrians debate for more than a decade, was taken by full council last night after St Albans Cycle Campaign chair, Stephen Wragg, spoke to a petition signed by nearly 1,100 residents in support of cyclists using the park.
He pointed out that a trial in three other parks in the district had been a complete success and the opening of cycle routes had the support of the local community, the county council and the government. He added: “We all want to do our best to preserve this wonderful park but change is good.”
Mr Wragg got all-party support for his argument with environment portfolio holder, Cllr Daniel Chichester-Miles saying he hoped to introduce cycle routes within the current municipal year.
It is likely that a North/South route will be established first with an East/West route to follow.
