A GREAT-GRANDMOTHER was thrown a special birthday bash this week to celebrate her centenary.

Phyllis Orde was surrounded by family and friends on Tuesday who gathered at St Matthew’s Care Home in Radlett to toast her 100th birthday and enjoy a slice of cake.

Phyllis was born in Wales on March 26, 1913. As a young girl she moved to Middlesex to train as a nurse at Stanmore Hospital where she met her late husband Harry.

The pair, who were married for 59 years, relocated to London Colney where they both worked as nurses at the former Harperbury Hospital in Radlett.

She has two daughters, six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
