A GANG of "hoodies" went on the rampage in St Albans over Easter throwing bricks and concrete slabs through car windows.

They wrecked a family's double celebration was when they smashed the back window of a car with a paving slab.

Sue and Nick Heather of Hatfield Road, St Albans, were hosting a joint birthday party for their nine-year-old son Stephen and for Sue's father Jim Connolly on March 22.

Mother-of-two Sue said: "My mum died in August and this was dad's first birthday spent without her so it was quite an emotional day for all of us."

But when her father went to his car to drive home at around 11pm he found that a paving slab had been thrown through the back window though nothing had been taken.

Pointless

Sue said: "This was such a pointless and upsetting crime. The car had been parked on our driveway and Dad was shocked, angry and upset. He then had to drive back to London in snowy conditions with no back window.

"He was unable to get the window replaced until the Monday morning due to it being a holiday weekend so he had to borrow a car to visit my mum's grave."

The same evening around the corner in Longacres, a Vauxhall Astra had bricks thrown through its rear windows at about 10.15pm.

The Heather family later discovered that a neighbour had heard a noise at 10.30pm that night and chased away a group of six "hoodies" on bikes and on foot who ran off along Oakwood Drive.

Sue said: "The police told us there had been a similar incident in Longacres."

A police spokesman said house-to-house inquiries had been carried out after the crime was reported but no arrests had been made.
