PAN-TASTIC fun was had by teams of tossers who took part in the annual pancake race in St Albans today.

Despite bitterly cold conditions competitors armed with frying pans congregated in St Peter’s Street to try and flip their way to victory in either the traditional or Flippin’ Walkers’ Race.

As the heats got underway several groups fell at the first hurdle, including a team from the Herts Ad who were struck by race day nerves.

Oaklands Wolves eventually ended up battering the opposition and walked away with the frying pan trophy in the main event.

In the walking race Parkers Flippers took home the title, despite facing competition from defending champions Midnight Walk from Iain Rennie Grove House Hospice Care (IRGH).

Ruth Barber, events manager at IRGH, said: “We had great fun taking part in the race and have now perfected our pancake tossing skills.

“Even though we didn’t win this year, we returned to Grove House with smiles on our faces and we’ll be back to try again in 2014.”

St Albans Mayor Cllr Eileen Harris said: “I had not realised the race was so competitive. I was very impressed with the athleticism. It is a fantastic tradition and the fact they keep it up in the town centre is wonderful.

“It was so well attended, I thought people would not come because of the cold but they came in their crowds.”

The pancake race was organised by St Albans district council and sponsored by McDougalls with pancakes supplied by Tesco.
