One of Britain’s top sound designers, who hails from Harpenden, has collected yet another award for his work, winning an Oscar for editing the sound for hit film Gravity.

After walking onto the stage to pick up his award last night (Sunday), a clearly stunned Glenn Freemantle said: “Wow, my heart is beating faster than Sandra’s [Bullock]”.

He went on to thank people for an, “absolutely amazing film and a great opportunity”.

Glenn, of Grasmere Avenue, also thanked the “hard-working” crew - twice - and Warner Bros for, “being 100 per cent behind us; we couldn’t have done it without that commitment from everybody. We had such a team on this film and a big bond”.

The sound designer then thanked his wife and three sons.

As he left the stage Glenn was applauded by the star-studded audience, including Sandra Bullock.

Gravity picked up seven Oscars at the 86th Academy Awards.

The film is about three members of the shuttle crew working outside the craft to repair the Hubble telescope, when they have a catastrophic encounter with a field of space debris.

Dr Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is a novice astronaut who has to overcome her terror and rely on instructions from her veteran flight companion, Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) if she is to survive.

It was the second Academy Awards nomination for Glenn, who was previously nominated for Slumdog Millionaire.

The sound designer won a BAFTA for that film in 2009.

He has been working in the movie industry for more than 30 years and has edited sound on over 70 films.

Glenn began his career in the cutting rooms when just a teenager, at the age of 16, and has since then worked with some of the industry’s best known directors.

Among the many films he has worked on are Love Actually and the two Bridget Jones movies.

Glenn has a post production sound service, Sound 24, specialising in film and television, based within Pinewood Studios.

• Philomena, the box-office busting adoption drama inspired by St Albans woman Philomena Lee, was nominated for a string of awards including best picture, actress in a leading role, music (original score) and writing (adapted screenplay). However the film did not receive an Oscar.
