MOBILE phone giant Orange is set to close its St Albans office, it announced to staff yesterday.
The office, based in Station Way, houses around 185 employees with positions ranging from marketing to sales.
Orange has promised that every single employee will be presented with alternative ways of working in their current roles. For some people this could mean working from home but others may be offered relocations as far away as Bristol.
The move comes after the lease on the premises came up for renewal. The company inherited the site when it merged with former broadband provider Wanadoo and said they took the decision to close it for "efficiency" reasons.
Orange director of communications, Stuart Jackson said: "I think people understand we have to be efficient as a business. We will work with employees to make it work for them. We are a very flexible company.2
St Albans MP Anne Main added: "I'm pleased for my constituents in the office that Orange are offering other jobs or alternative ways of working. But I am disappointed that the economic climate has toppled another head in St Albans.
