NINE people were held in custody after police found illegal immigrants in the back of a lorry on an industrial estate on Tuesday.

Eight immigrants were discovered in the vehicle on the Riverside Industrial Estate in London Colney and have been charged with immigration offences. They have since been handed over to the Home Office.

Five of them were taken to a detention centre in Cambs and three teenage boys aged from 16 to 17, one of whom was from Eritrea, were passed over to social services because of their age.

A 40-year-old man from Belgium, understood to be the lorry driver, was charged with immigration offences and assistance to escape and has been released on bail until August 19.

Seven police officers were involved in the arrests after receiving information from Essex Police.
