FORMER St Albans Mayor and chairman of Harpenden Day Centre Ken Jenkins is one of seven local people to receive awards in the New Year's Honours List.

Mr Jenkins, who lives in the town and is an honorary Alderman, has received an MBE for voluntary service to the community in St Albans and Harpenden.

Two other local people have been awarded MBEs for voluntary service to the community - Doreen Egarr of St Albans for voluntary service in the city and Christopher Lavers, also of St Albans, for voluntary service in Surrey.

An MBE has also been awarded to Syd Wright, chief technician for insect survey at Rothamsted Research in Harpenden for services to science.

OBEs have been awarded to Professor Christopher Heginbotham of St Albans, former chief executive of the Mental Health Act Commission, for services to health care, and Arnold Vandermeer, also of St Albans, for voluntary service to the community in Herts.

Stephen Parker of St Albans was awarded a CBE for public service.
