Tourists struggling to find their way round the city have been pointed in the right direction following the installation of new monolith signs by the district council.

The signs can be found at key locations such as Verulamium Museum, Abbey station, Holywell Hill, St Peter’s Street and the platform 4 entrance to City station.

They include easy-to-follow maps illustrating destinations popular with visitors including the main shopping areas, as well as images of the city’s landmarks and the St Albans: Choose Your Story logo.

A code that directs smart phone users to www.enjoystalbans.com is also incorporated into the design.

This concept was tested in 2013 with two signs installed at the old Town Hall, St Peter’s Street, and at the main entrance to City station.

Cllr Beric Read, portfolio holder for community engagement and localism, said: “This new network of modern, bespoke signs will make it easier for visitors to find their way round St Albans.

“They are designed to reflect the city’s heritage by including images of the cathedral, Roman mosaics and other historical landmarks.”

The signs were developed in consultation with a range of local societies and groups and followed the council’s Public Realm Delivery Strategy that identified a need for them.
