A CONTRACT for the development of Westminster Lodge leisure centre was signed yesterday (Wednesday).

The construction of the new multi-million pound facility, which will be built next to the existing leisure centre in St Albans, will be carried out by developers Wilmott Dixon.

Portfolio holder for sport and leisure, Anthony Rowlands, said: “The signing is an important milestone in this major project which will dramatically increase the range of leisure facilities available at Westminster Lodge, so meeting the leisure needs of a wide section of the community.

“In addition to the 25 metre by 8 metre lane pool, 7 metre by 10 metre training pool and confidence water area, there will be a sports hall with a capacity for four badminton courts, poolside health suite, spa, 200 station fitness gym, exercise studios, climbing wall, crche, children’s soft play area and a caf/bistro.”

He added: “The Lib Dem administration has not been deflected by the vocal opposition of a small minority abetted by the opposition parties. “St Albans would have been left with an out of date, inadequate, energy inefficient, disabled unfriendly, costly to maintain and problem-ridden facility. Thanks to Lib Dem perseverance, we will have a brand new public facility fit for the 21st Century. This is cause for celebration.’
