Ten illustrative signs have been unveiled around Verulamium Park to help visitors find key attractions such as the Abbey and the Roman hypocaust.

St Albans district council has installed the welcome and information signs at the entrances to the park along with seven new directional finger-post signs.

They were funded by the council and Herts county council and also highlight the Green Ring route being developed around the city.

Cllr Geoff Harrison, Mayor of St Albans, said at the launch presentation last week: “These signs will make it easier for visitors to navigate their way round this wonderful park and its features.

“The beautiful welcome signs contain an illustrated map and QR codes, directing mobile phone users to useful websites for more information.”

The council is also planning to install 11 illustrated interpretation signs which will provide information about particular aspects of the park.

Cllr Daniel Chichester-Miles, portfolio holder for environment, said: “These will include signs on wildlife in the park and historical sites like the Roman Gate, straddling Watling Street, and the underground hypocaust heating system.”

The lectern-style interpretation signs are being illustrated by Redbourn artist Ernie Leahy and are funded by the council and English Heritage.
