Frustrated residents have persuaded St Albans council to consult on expanding a residents parking zone into their roads.

Residents of Waverley Road in St Albans have long suffered from City Hospital parking and approached the council about the problem.

Now the council is consulting on expanding Zone R, which is mainly in Carlisle Avenue, into Waverley Road, Palfrey Close, Heath Avenue and sections of Townsend Drive.

Permit holders would be able to park in residents’ bays with limited waiting bays for visitors within the extended zone.

Mike Lovelady, the council’s head of legal, democratic and regulatory service, said: “In addition, yellow lines are being introduced to improve road safety through better visibility and traffic flow.”

The Traffic Regulation Order, which is currently being advertised and expires for comments next Thursday, August 18, also proposes to extend the double yellow lines in Carlisle Avenue to prevent motorists parking ner the traffic-calming measures.

Anyone who wants to object or make comments on the scheme needs to put their concerns forward in writing to the council’s parking team.

Cllr Beric Read, the counci’s portfolio holder for engagement and localist will consider all the comments before a decision is taken on the scheme.

* Charges are to rise considerably in a car park which has been blighted by all-day commuter parking.

The council has received complaints about the use of the Clarence Park car park where commuter parking has prevented spaces being available for park users.

Charles Turner from the council’s legal, democratic and regulatory services team, said: “Following consultation with the Clarence Park Consultative Forum, we have decided to increase the charges for parking on Monday to Friday for up to five hours to £5.10 and for up to 24 hours to £10.20 between the charging hours of 7.30am and 6.30pm. This is in line with parking charges at other city centre car parks.

“It remains free to park on weekdays for up to three hours, provided a ticket is displayed, and at the weekend.”

Currently parking is £1 for up to five hours and £4 for up to 24 hours. The new charges will be introduced on September 5.
