Adjoining signs bearing contradictory information about resurfacing work along a busy St Albans road have confused motorists and residents alike.

The £202,000 scheme is being carried out on the A1057 Hatfield Road but is being completed in two phases - the first from Ashley Road to Royal Road and the second from Royal Road to Clarence Road..

But signs bearing separate dates have been posted close to each other by Morrison’s supermarket, leaving residents unsure whether the road is being closed overnight from July 8 to 10 or from July 13 to 15.

A county council spokesman said that a member of the highways team had been to look at the signs and realised that the two signs, one relating to the first phase and the other to the second phase, had been inadvertently placed closed to Morrisons supermarket.

The resurfacing work is being carried out by Eurovia on behalf of the county council and a signed alternative route will be in place during the closures which will be between 8pm and 5am.
