A MOTORCYCLIST was knocked off his bike by a load of washing machines on a pick-up truck yesterday (Monday) morning.

Police are appealing for the driver of the red Ford Transit to come forward following the accident in Coopers Green Lane because they believe he may not have realised that his load had struck the motorcyclist.

The victim was travelling from Welwyn Garden City to St Albans on his red BMW bike. As he reached the corner 50 yards from Sandpit Lane, he was struck by the load on the pick-up vehicle which was travelling in the opposite direction, and came off his bike.

The rider, a man in his 50s, was taken to the QEII Hospital with a seriously-injured hand.

Pc Nigel Wakerley from the Central Area Road Policing Unit, said: "If you were the driver or saw the vehicle with old washing machines at about 8am on Monday morning, please get in touch with us. Or if you know anyone who was collecting or delivering old washing machines, we would like to hear from you."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0845 33 00 222.
