CROWDS turned out in force to encourage more than 6,000 runners to go the extra mile at the annual St Albans Half Marathon on Sunday.

The event, supported by the Herts Advertiser, saw competitors of all ages tackle the new 13.1 mile route around the city, starting at Westminster Lodge, in a bid to raise money for local charities.

For the first time in its 32-year history all 3,500 places in the Half Marathon were snapped up before race day, and there was also high demand for the 5k, Walking Half Marathon and Children’s 1.5-mile Fun Run.

Earl Franklin, who completed his first half marathon wearing a cow costume in aid of Red Rubber Ball Foundation, said: “I was so excited I crossed the line on all fours. My knees are very sore and I’m walking like a 90-year-old but I managed to hit my target of £500.”

Spectator Jessica Chivers also commented on Twitter: “Tears prickling at back of eyes watching everyone gather at start line of St Albans half marathon – all that training and effort #brilliant.”

All proceeds, which are hoped will exceed last year’s total of £28,000, will be divided between the main benefiting charity Hertfordshire Society for the Blind and other local charities.

Race director Mark Caldwell said: “I am delighted about how successful the St Albans Half Marathon event was on Sunday.

“The atmosphere in the park was electric and the positive feedback from participants across all the events shows just what a great event this continues to be after its 32 years raising thousands of pounds for local charities.

“I would like to thank all our sponsors, the event team and of course the participants for being part of this amazing fundraising event.”
