Scooting along to tea with the Mayor of St Albans proved very apt for a young art competition winner.

The competition was launched during Local Democracy Week when children in the district’s primary schools were invited to create a picture depicting what they would do if they were Mayor for the day.

Molly McCann, of Form 111 of St Hilda’s School in Harpenden, had the idea of providing a thousand scooters for people who were unwell or had troubles and then depicted what she had in mind in the picture she entered for the Mayor’s Christmas Card competition.

Molly drew a picture of colourful scooters with the Mayor standing alongside and holding a pair of scissors ready to cut a ribbon.

Her work has been printed on the back of the Mayor’s Christmas card and with five school friends, she was invited along to take tea with the Mayor, Cllr Frances Leonard.

The Mayor said: “Molly’s picture was highly colourful and imaginative. It shows that the Mayor has a role to play in helping people in the district overcome difficulties that they face, through charitable fundraising and other initiatives.”

She presented Molly with her picture in a frame and a £10 book token when they met for tea and the youngsters were also given a talk about the role of Mayor by the macebearer John Hills.

A similar competition was held for secondary school pupils and the winner was Jasmine Marsh of St Albans Girls School who was presented with a £25 Amazon voucher at a school assembly in November.
