EWE would not believe the places a miniature crochet figure, whose staunch motto is “I wool know no fear,” has been.

The pint-sized figure, a miniature wool version of St Albans cancer sufferer Bailey Sarwa, has been racking up air and land miles trekking up Snowdonia, clutching the Olympic Torch, and even cuddling up to a reptile.

“Mini Bailey” is living the good life, travelling around Britain and overseas to help fundraise for his brave 13-year-old namesake, who is fighting a recurrence of neuroblastoma.

Joanne Martin, a fundraising coordinator for the Bailey Sarwa Appeal, which is trying to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds to enable Bailey to have treatment overseas after he was denied antibody treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital, said Mini Bailey has also been to China.

She explained that she had asked talented knitter and crocheter Charlotte Heilling of Studio Delirium, in the courtyard of the Secret Garden Caf, George Street, to create a Mini Bailey for the appeal.

A prototype was crocheted and approved by the human version, so now others can also “build-a-Bay”.

Joanne said: “The idea behind him is to get him all over the world doing really interesting things.”

The kits are available for 12.50 or ready-made for 17.50 from Studio Delirium. They take up to five hours to make.

Mini Bailey has been to Thailand and has even trained with an Olympic swimmer.

However the figure has been so popular that volunteers are desperately needed to help crochet more to keep up with demand, as Charlotte has Repetitive Strain Injury.

A token payment of 5 will be offered for each one made.

Volunteers can email Joanne at fundraising@baileysarwa.co.uk or call her on 07525 901543.
