A CAMPFIRE was started in the middle of a farmer’s crop field overnight.
Police called firefighters to the scene in Butterfield Lane at around 9pm after they found the bonfire started by four men who had driven onto the field and were about to erect tents.
All four men, three of whom were in their late 20s and the other in his 30s, were given out of custody cautions for criminal damage.
The fire crew from St Albans Fire Station quickly put out the flames and have since sent out a warning about starting bonfires. They stressed that such irresponsible actions can not only cause damage to crops in fields but that fires can also spread relatively easily, especially in dry weather.
