Writer and broadcaster Melvyn Bragg will be discussing his latest novel as part of a special literary event at St Albans Cathedral next month.
An Evening with Melvyn Bragg is presented by St Albans Literary Festival in associated with Waterstones St Albans, and takes place on November 17 at 7pm.
He will be discussing his latest novel Now is the Time, a rich and compelling tale set in the heart of the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381 and partly set in St Albans. As a virulent plague gripped England, Richard II’s counsellors brought news of growing resistance to his crippling new taxes. When the 14-year-old king sent armed commissioners to claim his money, the commoners revolted, throwing his sovereignty into serious jeopardy.
Masterfully blending fact and fiction in a tale of power and justice, religion, loyalty and ethics, Melvyn Bragg brings alive this momentous episode in English history which saw our island’s first democratic uprising.
Tickets are just £5 and are available from St Albans Cathedral (www.stalbanscathedral.org 01727 890200/860780) or Waterstones in St Peter’s Street (01727 834966).
