A "MEGA" pothole outside St Albans City station has been causing problems for commuters for over five weeks.

The district council's portfolio holder for community engagement and support Cllr Anthony Rowlands first noticed the Station Way pothole on December 15 and has been complaining to owners of the road Network Rail ever since.

But despite reminding Network Rail of its presence every week, the pothole - which is between the bus interchange and the original multi-storey car park - still remains unfilled over a month later.

Cllr Rowlands, who described the pot hole as a "trench", said that he was amazed that nothing has been done: "I have been emphasising how dangerous this is for cyclists and how much damage it will do to vehicles for ages. I am left to conclude that Network Rail just don't give a damn."

Cllr Rowlands passed his complaints onto station services manager at St Albans City station Sara Turner and in her email of complaint to FirstGroup transport operator this week, she said that she is receiving complaints "daily" from local taxi and bus drivers and pedestrians about the pothole.

"There have been no temporary repairs and no work carried out even though we were advised in December work would be commencing on January 13, 2010.

"This pothole is dangerous and needs to be addressed as soon as possible before there is a serious injury to a cyclist, pedestrian or damage to vehicles."

A Network Rail spokesperson said: "The potholes on Station Way are scheduled to be repaired this Friday. We apologise for the delay in carrying out this work, which was due to the late delivery of materials needed to carry out the repairs.

"Following these repairs, Station Way is scheduled to be completely resurfaced later in the spring."

n London Colney has also had its fair share of pothole problems and one aggrieved motorist who claimed his car was "wrecked" is seeking compensation.

David Ketley, 24, has written a letter of complaint to Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) over a pothole on the High Street near the London Colney roundabout which has ruined the suspension and wheels on his car.

Delivery man David, who travels up and down the High Street on a daily basis for work, said that the pothole, which was filled in by HCC earlier this week, rendered the road undriveable.

"It was extremely difficult to drive around it without causing an accident and there were no warning signs of any kind about the damage.

"Although it has now been repaired by HCC, in my opinion it has been filled in with loose tarmac which will only crumble if we have the same weather conditions again."

David, who is moving to St Albans this month, said his car had not handled properly since hitting the pothole and he was anticipating a repair bill of at least 200.

A spokesperson for HCC said that she was aware of Mr Ketley's complains and added: "We can say that we deal with each compensation claim on individual merit.
