A Markyate chef has been crowned ‘King of Curry’ at the annual Curry Life Awards.

Sayifur Rahman, who works at the Markyate Spice in High Street, collected his award in front of an audience of more than 600 people at London’s Royal Lancaster Hotel.

The awards, hosted by journalist and broadcaster Michael Buerk, recognised the 13 best curry restaurants and 19 best curry chefs in the UK, and other awards for takeaways, life-time achievement and the international honour award for a successful female chef from India.

Sayifur started working in the curry industry as a teenager washing up and peeling potatoes.

Markyate Spice manager Gyash Uddin said: “We’re all delighted for Sayifur. He is an amazing chef and whatever he touches tastes great. The restaurant was on its knees when we took it over and has since gone from strength to strength thanks to his efforts in the kitchen.”
