The search is on for a conman who robbed a pensioner of £3,500, after telling him that his roof needed repairing.

The man in question was one of two men who knocked on the door of the victim, said to be in his late 70s, on June 25 between 3.15pm and 5.50pm.

The two men entered his St Albans home on Chiswell Green Lane and insisted that vital roof repairs were in order, urging the elderly man to drive and take out £3,500 in cash.

Upon his return, the two men stole the money, which the elderly man believed was necessary to fix his roof.

An Evofit image of the man has been released and police are asking people to come forward if they recognise the image or description of the man, who was believed to be the leading culprit of the two.

He was said to be 6ft 2ins, of large build, around 25 years old, clean shaven with mousy brown hair.

Police investigator Julie Fewings from the specialist unit Operation Manhunt said: “This is an appalling incident where the offenders pressured the victim to get the money they claimed they needed for the roof repairs.

“I’d urge people never to accept offers of work at their door. Always check with a legitimate trader to see if the work is necessary and obtain at least two quotes for the work before proceeding.”

Anyone with information should contact Operation Manhunt via the non emergency number 101. Alternatively call the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
