A man is in a critical condition after sustaining a ‘very serious’ head injury in a car crash early this morning (Tuesday).

The man, said to be in his late teens, was driving a black Vauxhall Astra when he allegedly collided with a parked campervan after 2am on Marshal’s Drive.

He had to be cut out of his car by the fire service and was taken to St Mary’s Hospital by land ambulance with a ‘very serious isolated head injury’, according to an East of England Ambulance Service (EEAST) spokesman.

A rapid response car, ambulance crew, Magpas critical care car, two ambulance officers, and doctors all attended the scene.

A spokeswoman for Magpas Helimedix said that at 3.18am a doctor and a paramedic arrived at St Albans following the collision.

She said: “The Helimedix assessed a man, in his late teens, who had suffered multiple injuries.

“The Magpas team anaesthetised the patient, providing him with specialist A&E care on the scene, before accompanying him initially to Watford General Hospital, and then on to St Mary’s Hospital in Westminster for further treatment.

“On arrival at the hospital the patient was in a critical condition. EEAST Ambulance Service paramedic crews, Fire and Rescue Services, the Police, and a basics doctor were also on the scene.

“The Magpas team would like to thank all the emergency services for their excellent team work.”

The road was closed between the junctions of Marshalswick Lane and Homewood Road while police are carry out investigations into what happened, but has since been reopened.
