On Tuesday (20) police were investigating the scene of the alleged assault, which took place against a woman in her 50s, near St Stephens Hill.
The area was taped off with a number of police cars present so police could ‘continue their enquiries’.
A man, 55, from St Albans was arrested on suspicion of rape and has been released on conditional bail.
A spokesman for Herts Police said: “The offence is believed to be an isolated incident however we are currently still in the very early stages of the investigation and it would be inappropriate to comment further at present.”
