MAMMOTHS once roamed across one part of St Albans as the 100-plus visitors to a project launch discovered recently.
A fossilised mammoth tooth was one of the items on display when the lottery-funded More Memories of Sopwell project was formally launched.
Past and present residents of Sopwell turned up to enjoy the party and many of them shared their memories using a video booth.
On display were lots of old photographs and maps of the area as well as artefacts and memorabilia collected from gardens and allotments including the fossilised mammoth tooth found in Watling Street.
In addition there were several 1930s milk bottles from Sopwell Mill Farm and old coins dating back to the 17th Century.
The event was a double celebration because it was the 10th anniversary of the formation of Sopwell Residents Association.
