A MAJOR St Albans road was closed overnight on Tuesday after water from a burst main froze over.

Batchwood Drive was shut by Herts Highways from the Harpenden Road junction to Everlasting Lane at 10pm when a crew monitoring the situation decided the road had become too icy to remain open.

It reopened at around 8am this morning (Wednesday) when it was felt that the conditions had improved sufficiently to make it safe.

A spokesperson for Herts Highways apologised for the inconvenience but said that given the very low temperatures, there was a high risk that the water leak would freeze and create a major hazard.

Access was maintained for residents but a diversion was in operation via Waverley Road, Normandy Road, Catherine Street, St Peter's Street and Harpenden Road.
