The Magpas air ambulance was called out on Christmas morning to a man who had been thrown from his car on the M1 near St Albans.
A car had rolled at junction eight, and the man, who is in his 30s, had been ejected from the vehicle.
Dr Sam Todd and paramedic Oliver Robinson from Magpas landed near the scene at 10am, and helped assess the patient, who had multiple injuries.
He was sedated and taken by Dr Todd, Mr Robinson, crewmember George Phillips, and pilot Richard Eastwood to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in a critical condition.
Another doctor, the Highways Agency, East of England Ambulance Service, and Herts Police were also at the scene.
