SECTIONS of the M1 in Herts could be closed while it is widened from three to four lanes. The widening, from the M25 to Junction 10 at Luton, is already approaching the construction stage but the Highways Agency is currently unsure for how long it would be shut for, when it would be shut and where the diversion routes would be. A spokesperson said that it could be necessary to close the motorway while the seven bridges between junction 6a and 10 were replaced to make way for the extra lane. She said: "We would build the new bridges first before taking the old ones away and it may be necessary to close the motorway while that is done. If the motorway is to be closed it would be over the weekends." A meeting was due to be held yesterday (Wednesday) where clearer plans for the schedule of work would be discussed. Currently an area at the side of the motorway is being prepared.
