A MAN found with 3.3 million worth of heroin in the boot of his car on the M1 has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Isfendiyar Hassan, aged 36, from Grant Close in Southgate, was sentenced at St Albans Crown Court after pleading guilty to possession of heroin with intent to supply.

Hertfordshire Roads Policing Unit, Officers from Tactical Team and the newly formed RAID team (Rapid Action Intervention Disruption) that sits in the Serious and Organised Crime Group, apprehended Hassan on Tuesday May 19 at 10.20pm on the M1 between junctions 8 and 9.

The stop-check revealed a quantity of heroin weighing 31.4 kilos and with a street value estimated to be 3.3 million. He was travelling northbound when he was stopped, between the Hemel Hempstead and Flamstead turns.

Hassan admitted in court that he had been acting as a courier for the drugs. He was convicted of possession with intent to supply heroin and was given an 8 year prison sentence. He was also ordered to pay back 6,000 he was due to receive for the job under the Proceeds Of Crime Act.

PC Kelly Davenport from the RAID Team said: "This is one of the biggest jobs we have had so far since the RAID team began in February this year.

"We are really pleased at this positive result, which sends a strong message that drug trafficking and supplying will not be tolerated in the county. If you do it, there is a strong chance you will be caught.
