TRAFFIC jams affecting the whole of the southern and western parts of St Albans were caused by a serious crash on the southbound M1 this morning (Monday).
The accident happened at 5.39am when a white Mercedes van was in collision with another vehicle which did not stop.
As a result, the southbound carriageway was closed between Junction 5, Watford, and Junction 4, Edgeware.
The van driver was taken to Watford General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Traffic queues built up along Bluehouse Hill, Batchwood Drive, King Harry Lane and across the M10 roundabout as we as in the Bricket Wood and Park Street areas.
Police are appealing for anyone with information about the crash to call them on 0845 3300222.
